TINAKORI RD is swapping cars for stalls this weekend to make way for Wellington’s oldest fair and Thorndon School’s biggest fundraising event.
The annual Thorndon Fair raised $50,000 last year and principal Bill Sutton is hoping to match that.
The fair starts at 10am and entry is by gold coin donation with proceeds going towards computer equipment and extra staff.
The event is so big the school relies heavily on parents to help run it, with 300 to 400 expected to turn out on Sunday.
Generally, one parent per household volunteers their time either on the day or in preparation for the fair.
A Fair Committee has been spending more than 40 hours a week organising the fair.
Junior students contribute by making cards to thank Tinakori Rd residents and businesses for allowing the disruption, and senior students will be selling strawberries and cream.
Demand for stalls is high, with 320 allocated and about 40 people on the waiting list.
A variety of goods will be available, ranging from the traditional, such as wood turning and preserves, to clothing, furniture and South American artefacts.
Food stalls and barbeques will be operating, as well as musical entertainment from buskers, one of them a violinist from the school.
